Experience the heart of Ethiopia’s tribal lands in this 12-day cultural journey through the Omo Valley, one of the most culturally diverse regions in Africa. Encounter unique tribal communities, stunning landscapes, vibrant markets, and ancient traditions, all guided ethically and respectfully.
From the bustling streets of Addis Ababa to the remote villages along the Omo River, this expedition offers an immersive experience in Ethiopia’s living heritage, ideal for travelers interested in cultural exploration, photography, and authentic local encounters.
Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa
Your journey begins with your arrival at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. After being met and transferred to your accommodation, you’ll have a chance to explore the capital. This typically includes a city tour to places like the National Museum (home of the famous ‘Lucy’ fossil), the Holy Trinity Cathedral, and the vibrant open-air Mercato market.
Day 2: Addis Ababa to Awassa/Langano
Today you drive south through the Great Rift Valley. On the way, you can stop at the Melka Kunture prehistoric site, the 12th-century rock-hewn church of Adadi Mariam, and the ancient Tiya Stelae field (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). You will spend the night near one of the Rift Valley lakes, such as Awassa or Langano.
Day 3: Awassa to Arba Minch
Begin the day by visiting the bustling Awassa fish market on the lake shore. You will then continue your drive south to Arba Minch, stopping en route to visit local villages, such as those of the Alaba or Oromo people. Arba Minch, meaning “Forty Springs,” is known for its beautiful views overlooking Lakes Abaya and Chamo.
Day 4: Dorze Village and Lake Chamo Boat Trip
In the morning, drive up the Guge Mountains to visit the Dorze people, who are famous for their remarkable, tall, beehive-shaped bamboo houses and excellent weaving skills. In the afternoon, take a boat trip on Lake Chamo to visit the “crocodile market,” where large Nile crocodiles and hippos congregate, and enjoy the abundant birdlife.
Day 5: Arba Minch to Konso
Drive to the town of Konso. Here, you will immerse yourself in the culture of the Konso people, known for their elaborate, stone-walled terracing and fortified villages, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape. Explore their villages and learn about their social structure and the tradition of erecting waka (wooden statues) in honor of the dead.
Day 6: Konso to Jinka
Continue your journey into the Omo Valley, heading toward Jinka. A major highlight today is visiting the lively Key Afar Market (Thursdays are best), where tribes like the Banna and Tsemai gather to trade goods. Upon arrival in Jinka, visit the South Omo Museum and Research Centre for an excellent overview of the region’s diverse ethnic groups.
Day 7: Mursi Tribe and Drive to Turmi
Start the day with an early drive into Mago National Park to visit the Mursi tribe. The Mursi are particularly known for the large clay plates women wear inserted into their lower lips. Afterward, drive south to Turmi, the center of the Hamer people.
Day 8: Dassanech Tribe in Omorate
Today involves a day trip to Omorate, located near the border with Kenya. You will cross the Omo River by local dugout canoe to visit a village of the Dassanech (Geleb) tribe. Returning to Turmi, spend the afternoon visiting a local Hamer village. Keep an eye out for any announced Hamer Bull Jumping ceremonies, traditional rites of passage often happening around Turmi.
Day 9: Karo Tribe and Dimeka/Turmi Market
Drive to the village of Korcho on the banks of the Omo River to visit the Karo people, the Omo Valley’s smallest tribe, renowned for their striking body and face painting for ceremonial occasions. Also visit a local market, such as the lively Dimeka Market (best on Saturday or Tuesday), where multiple tribes gather to socialize and trade.
Day 10: Turmi to Yabello
Leaving the core Omo Valley, drive north through the vast Borena region. The main stop today is a visit to the Borena people’s Singing Wells at Dublock, where pastoralists form human chains, singing rhythmically to extract water for their enormous herds of cattle.
Day 11: El Sod Crater and Drive to Yirgalem/Lake Langano
In the morning, take an excursion to the El Sod Crater Lake to observe the salt-mining tradition of the Borena people. Following this, enjoy a scenic drive further north towards the Rift Valley, staying overnight at a resort either in Yirgalem or on the shores of Lake Langano.
Day 12: Return to Addis Ababa and Departure
After breakfast, begin the final drive back to Addis Ababa. You may stop at Abijatta-Shala National Park for views of the Rift Valley lakes and migratory birds. Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, enjoy a farewell dinner featuring traditional Ethiopian cuisine and music before being transferred to the airport for your departure.
Posted on Paul-Émile GVerified Once in a Lifetime Trip Je recommande absolument.
