Explore Ethiopia’s four UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the north Axum, Lalibela, Gondar, and the Simien Mountains alongside the important religious and historical landmarks of Lake Tana and the Tigray region. This 13-day journey immerses you in Ethiopia’s rich history, architecture, and culture.
Day 1: Arrival and Addis Ababa City Tour
Your tour begins upon arrival at Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa. After checking into your hotel, explore the city, including the National Museum (home of the 3.2-million-year-old fossil “Lucy”). In the afternoon, visit the Ethnological Museum and enjoy panoramic views from Entoto Mountain. Conclude the day with a traditional Ethiopian dinner and coffee ceremony.
Day 2: Fly to Bahir Dar & Blue Nile Falls
Take an early domestic flight north to Bahir Dar, located on the southern shore of Lake Tana. In the afternoon, drive to the majestic Blue Nile Falls (Tis Abay) and enjoy a short hike in the surrounding area.
Day 3: Lake Tana Monasteries & Drive to Gondar
Embark on a morning boat trip across Lake Tana to visit ancient 14th-century monasteries hidden on the islands, including Ura Kidane Mehret on the Zege Peninsula, renowned for its incredible wall murals. After lunch, take a scenic three-hour drive to Gondar.
Days 4–7: Gondar, Simien Mountains, and Axum
Day 4: Gondar, The “Camelot of Africa”
Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Gondar. Visit the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), a complex of 17th-century castles, the Baths of Fasilides, and Debre Birhan Selassie Church, famous for its ceiling adorned with angelic faces.
Day 5: Simien Mountains National Park (Trekking)
Drive from Gondar to Simien Mountains National Park (UNESCO). After park formalities in Debark, transfer to your lodge or campsite near Sankaber. Spend the afternoon on a short trek along dramatic escarpments, acclimatizing and spotting Gelada Baboons.
Day 6: Simien Mountains Scenic Drive to Axum
Enjoy a final morning of breathtaking scenery and wildlife spotting in the Simien Mountains. Later, drive north to Axum via the scenic Tekeze River Gorge.
Day 7: Axum Ancient Empire
A full day exploring Axum, capital of one of the world’s oldest kingdoms. Visit the Stelae Field, the ruins of Queen of Sheba’s Palace, and the Church of St. Mary of Zion, where the Ark of the Covenant is traditionally believed to reside.Days 8–13: Tigray Churches, Lalibela, and Departure
Day 8: Yeha Temple & Drive to Gheralta
Drive east toward Tigray. En route, visit the pre-Christian ruins of Yeha Temple (5th century BC) and continue to the Gheralta area, known for its remote rock-hewn churches.
Day 9: Climbing the Tigray Rock Churches
Explore the spectacular Gheralta rock-hewn churches. Depending on fitness and interest, visit Abuna Yemata Guh (requires a climb) or the more accessible Abraha We Atsbeha. Drive to Mekele in the late afternoon.
Day 10: Scenic Drive to Lalibela
Drive south from Mekele to Lalibela, passing traditional villages and rugged highlands. Arrive in the evening at the crown jewel of the historic route.
Day 11: Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches (Cluster 1)
Spend a full day exploring Lalibela’s Northern Cluster, including Bet Medhane Alem and Bet Maryam, carved from living rock in the 12th–13th centuries.
Day 12: Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches (Cluster 2)
Visit Lalibela’s Southeastern Cluster and the iconic Bet Giyorgis (Church of St. George). In the afternoon, explore Yemrehanna Kristos, built inside a cave.
Day 13: Lalibela to Addis Ababa & Departure
After a final morning in the Lasta Mountains, transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to Addis Ababa. Time permitting, enjoy last-minute souvenir shopping before your international departure from Bole International Airport (ADD).
