This journey takes you from the high-altitude Afro-alpine wilderness of the Bale Mountains,
home to the endemic Ethiopian wolf, down through the stunning Rift Valley Lakes, to the
unique tribal cultures of the Omo Valley.
Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa and Drive to the Rift Valley
Arrive at Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa. After meeting your guide and a
brief city introduction, begin the drive south into the Great Rift Valley. Your destination is the
beautiful shores of Lake Langano, known for its brown-mineralized, bilharzia-free water,
making it suitable for swimming. Enjoy an afternoon relaxing by the lake, with opportunities
for bird watching and enjoying the natural surroundings.
Day 2: Rift Valley Lakes to Bale Mountains National Park
After an early breakfast, continue the drive towards the Bale Mountains. The journey takes
you through the beautiful countryside of the Oromo people, with views of local farmlands.
Stop at the Dinsho Conservation Centre, the park headquarters, for registration and a short
afternoon walk. This initial hike offers a high chance of spotting the endemic Mountain Nyala,
Menelik’s Bushbuck, and Warthogs in the Gaysay grasslands.
Day 3: Trekking in the Bale Mountains – Dinsho to Gushuralle/Sodota
Begin your multi-day trek deep into the Bale Mountains National Park. Hike through the
Juniper-Hagenia forests and up into the moorlands. This area is the prime habitat for the
Mountain Nyala, with chances of seeing the endemic Giant Mole-rat. Set up camp in the
beautiful wilderness near the Web Valley or a designated campsite like Sodota, enjoying the
high-altitude scenery.
Day 4: Trekking the Sanetti Plateau and Ethiopian Wolf Search
Trek up to the spectacular Sanetti Plateau, the largest continuous Afro-alpine area in Africa,
averaging over 4,000m. This “island in the sky” is the best place in the world to find the
Ethiopian Wolf, Africa’s rarest canid. Spend the day traversing the plateau, scanning the
moorlands for wolves, and observing the unique high-altitude flora, including the giant
lobelia. Camp overnight on the plateau or near a glacial lake.
Day 5: Harenna Forest Exploration and Drive to Goba
Spend the morning on the plateau for final wolf and birding opportunities before meeting
your vehicle. Drive across the plateau, then descend the dramatic escarpment into the vast,
mysterious Harenna Forest, the second-largest forest in Ethiopia. Explore this misty cloud
forest for endemic Bale Monkeys, Giant Forest Hogs, and various forest bird species. In the
late afternoon, drive to Goba or Robe for a comfortable hotel stay.
Day 6: Drive to Arba Minch via the Rift Valley
A long but scenic driving day, heading west and south from the Bale Mountains, back through
the Rift Valley, towards Arba Minch (“Forty Springs”). The journey offers stunning changes in
landscape, moving from the highlands to the savanna. Arrive in Arba Minch, which sits
dramatically on a ridge overlooking the two great Rift Valley lakes, Lake Abaya and Lake
Chamo.
Day 7: Lake Chamo Boat Trip and Dorze Village
In the morning, take a boat trip on Lake Chamo to the “Crocodile Market,” where you can view
some of the largest Nile crocodiles in Africa, along with hippos and an abundance of aquatic
birdlife, including pelicans and African Fish Eagles. In the afternoon, drive up the Guge
Mountains to visit a Dorze village, renowned for their towering, beehive-shaped bamboo
houses and excellent weaving skills.
Day 8: Drive to Jinka and Ari Village Visit
Continue the journey south into the Omo Valley, heading to the hub town of Jinka. En route,
you may stop to visit the Ari people, the largest ethnic group in the region, known for their
elaborate pottery and body painting. Visit the South Omo Research Centre and Museum in
Jinka for an introduction to the valley’s cultural diversity.
Day 9: Mago National Park and Mursi Tribe – Drive to Turmi
An early morning drive takes you across the Neri River and into the Mago National Park. Cross
the Savannah to visit the isolated Mursi tribe, famous worldwide for the women who wear
distinctive clay lip plates and the men who practice ceremonial stick fighting (donga). Later,
drive to Turmi, the base for exploring the Hamer people, with a potential stop at a local
market like Key Afer (depending on the day).
Day 10: Turmi, Omorate, and the Dassanech People
Drive south toward the Kenyan border and the town of Omorate. Cross the Omo River in a
local dugout canoe to visit a village of the Dassanech people, who inhabit the semi-arid lands
around the delta of the Omo River. Return to Turmi in the afternoon to visit a Hamer village. If
your visit coincides, you might witness a traditional Bull Jumping ceremony or the evening
Evangadi dance.
Day 11: Drive to Konso and Cultural Landscape Exploration
Drive north from Turmi to the town of Konso. The Konso Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO
World Heritage Site, distinguished by its ancient, fortified villages and sophisticated terracing
farming system. Visit a Konso village to see the community structure and the waka (funerary
wooden statues). After the visit, continue to your final overnight stop, perhaps in Yirgalem or
Hawassa.
Day 12: Lake Hawassa Fish Market and Return to Addis Ababa
Visit the bustling Hawassa Fish Market on the shores of Lake Hawassa, a vibrant, photogenic
spectacle where fishermen bring in their daily catch and local families buy and prepare food.
After breakfast, enjoy the final drive back to Addis Ababa, arriving in the late afternoon. Enjoy
a farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant with live music and dancing before
transferring to Bole International Airport for your international departure
Posted on Paul-Émile GVerified Once in a Lifetime Trip Je recommande absolument.
