Discover the southern cultural heartlands of Ethiopia from the wildlife-filled savannahs of the Borana people to the terraced highlands and UNESCO heritage landscapes of Konso, and the fascinating traditions of the Dorze in the Guge Mountains. This 8-day journey blends wildlife exploration, ancient pastoral culture, dramatic scenery, and Rift Valley lake adventures in one unforgettable narrative.
Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa and Flight to the South
Your journey begins in the vibrant capital of Addis Ababa. After landing at Bole International Airport (ADD), you’ll transfer to the domestic terminal for a morning or early afternoon flight south to Yabello. Yabello is the main town and administrative center for the Borana Zone, making it the perfect base for your national park exploration. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your local driver and transfer to your accommodation in or near town. This afternoon, you can take a brief orientation drive around Yabello, preparing for the days ahead.
Day 2: Wildlife and Birdlife in Borana National Park
Today is dedicated to the vast savannah of Borana National Park. Originally established for the conservation of the now rare Swayne’s Hartebeest, the park is a paradise for birdwatchers, being home to over 210 bird species. You’ll spend the day on game drives and walking safaris, looking for unique endemic birds like the White-tailed Swallow and the Stresemann’s Bushcrow. You may also spot mammals such as various species of gazelle and ostrich. The landscape of woody and herbaceous savanna is a beautiful introduction to this less-visited region of Ethiopia.
Day 3: The Borana Culture and the ‘Singing Wells’
Venture outside the park boundary to immerse yourself in the rich culture of the Borana Oromo people. Your main focus today will be visiting a Borana village and the extraordinary “Singing Wells” (known locally as ella). These deep, community-owned wells require a human chain of men to pass water up bucket-by-bucket, an arduous task they coordinate through a mesmerizing, rhythmic chanting—their “singing.” This ancient, complex system is vital for their cattle in the dry lands and offers a powerful insight into their pastoral traditions and community structure.
Day 4: Journey to Konso—A Cultural World Heritage Site
After breakfast, you’ll begin the scenic drive north toward the Konso area. The journey offers a spectacular change of landscape as you transition from the low-lying Borana plains into the dramatic, terraced highlands of the Konso people. The Konso Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for its intricate system of dry-stone terracing, fortified villages, and unique cultural practices, including their impressive wooden funerary statues, or waga. You’ll check into your lodge with stunning views over the cultivated hills.
Day 5: Exploring Konso Villages and Terraces
Spend a full day exploring the Konso area. You’ll visit several of their tightly packed, walled villages, observing their traditional governance structures and learning how their generations of intensive agricultural practices have shaped the stunning environment. A guided walk through the terraces, which are carefully designed to conserve soil and water, will show you the remarkable engineering prowess of the Konso people. Later in the day, you may also have the chance to see a display of the waga statues.
Day 6: Drive Towards Arba Minch and Lake Views
A beautiful drive today takes you further north to Arba Minch (meaning ‘Forty Springs’). The town is famously situated with a spectacular view over the “Bridge of God,” a narrow land bridge separating the two Rift Valley lakes: Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo. After checking into your lodge, you’ll have time to relax and take in the stunning panoramic vistas.
Day 7: Lake Chamo Boat Trip and Dorze Village Visit
Your morning begins with an unforgettable boat trip on Lake Chamo. This excursion provides a close-up look at the “Crocodile Market,” a large concentration of gigantic Nile crocodiles, as well as hippos and a huge variety of aquatic birds like pelicans and storks. In the afternoon, you will drive up into the Guge Mountains to visit a Dorze village. The Dorze are known for their towering, beautifully woven bamboo homes that can last for decades, and for their skill in weaving colorful cotton fabrics. You’ll learn about their unique culture and their staple food made from the false banana plant.
Day 8: Return to Addis Ababa and Departure
After a leisurely morning, you’ll transfer to the local airport near Arba Minch (or drive to another connecting airport, depending on flight schedules) to catch your domestic flight back to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your accommodation or the international airport for your evening departure, carrying with you the vivid memories of the Borana savannah and the unique cultures of the Konso and Dorze people.
